Light, Learning, and Laws: A Photonic Neuromorphic Approach to Discovering New Physics
Can artificial intelligence help discover new physics? Dr Rambach’s research hopes to find out!
BQI’s 2025 UQ Fellow is researching Photonic neuromorphic computing – a unique emerging platform that both advances energy-efficient artificial intelligence and also explores the foundational aspects of physics. By using light as a neural architecture—through integrated light sources, waveguides, interferometers, and superconducting nanowire detectors—these systems operate at speeds and sizes approaching fundamental physical limits. This raises an intriguing question: Can photonic neuromorphic systems help to uncover new physical laws or constants?
